Warrnambool and District Artists Society Inc.,

About Us

The Warrnambool Art Group was formed in 1961, when 17 people attended a meeting & set down the aims & objectives of the group, which were to encourage & promote an interest in art in Warrnambool & district. This first meeting was held in The Lady Bay Hotel.

Over the years the group met at many venues, church halls, private homes, the Tafe building, the Base Hospital etc., until 1994 when we purchased an ex scout hall in Sth. Warrnambool that became the groupís home. With money put aside for the building fund we soon added an extension to the building which was then named Merri View Gallery. Also, 1994 saw the introduction of Annual Awards for members, at an exhibition that was held. During this time the group held many exhibitions, raising a great amount of money, which was donated to local charities such as Yalundah & the Base Hospital. at the Warrnambool Art Gallery.

1986 saw the group become incorporated. Many workshops, paintout days & tutors have been enjoyed over the years. Since the purchase of our building some changes have occurred. The Street name has changed from Hopetoun St. to Coramba Crt., a new bridge has been constructed over the Merri river nearby & the group had a name change to the The Warrnambool Artistsí Society.

Now our society conducts members exhibitions at our Gallery & exhibits at South West Health Care, Cheese World and other locations on a regular basis. We hold regular monthly meetings on the first Wednesday of the month at our Gallery, with guest speakers, demonstrations, critique sessions & other art related activities. In 2011 The Society celebrated its 50th Birthday. As from 2007, the Society is now called Warrnambool & District Artists' Society Inc. to reflect the wider area covered by our members.

The Society received a grant in 2001 from the Warrnambool City Council's Community Developement Fund to produce a 12 metre mural, that is now located outside Merri View Gallery & is known as Warrnambool's Historic Mural
