REFERENCE MAP  & TRAIL NOTES

1. The main sanctuary block is mainly open forest and the over-story trees are Messmate and Manna Gum.

The under-story consists of Hop Wattle (Acacia stricta), Myrtle Wattle (Acacia myrtifolia), Prickly Moses (Acacia verticillata) and Prickly Tea-tree (Leptospermum continentale).

The forest is very open now. After the bushfires of 1983, the under-story grew very thick due to a lack of a tree canopy but has been slowly dying back ever since.

2. The large tree at this stop is a Manna Gum (Eucalyptus viminalis) and it sheds its bark each year to reveal a smooth white skin.

3. The big tree here is a Messmate Stringybark (Eucalyptus obliqua) and can grow up to 80 metres tall!

4. Along here you enter Riparian (Streamside) Forest. Because it is a much wetter area, the under-story is now Woolly Tea-tree (Leptospermum lanigerum), Hazel Pomaderris (Pomaderris aspera) under a canopy of Manna Gum and Blackwoods (Acacia melanoxylon). At ground level are Saw Sedges and ferns. Here is a colony of Hazel Pomaderris, all competing for light under a Blackwood canopy.

5. The Saw Sedges here are ideal habitat for Potoroos and Rufous Bristle Birds. Potoroos have a 'symbiotic' relationship with Wattles and the Mycorrhizal fungi which grow on their roots (this is where each species benefits from the others). The Potoroos benefit by feeding on the fungi, which in turn benefit by having their spore spread in the animal's droppings, which fertilise the surrounding vegetation. The digging by the Potoroos also benefits the trees and shrubs by loosening the ground for seeds to germinate in.

6. This boardwalk straddles an area where drainage lines run into Brucknell creek. The overhead canopy together with the high moisture content has eliminated all but the hardiest vegetation.

7. Dead trees and stumps provide a valuable home to many animals, birds, insects and grubs.
