Most Warrnambool residents will remember when the Tourist Information Centre was located at the Swan Reserve until recently when it was relocated to Flagstaff Hill.

BUT DID YOU KNOW:

The Swan Reserve was the original site of the Warrnambool Saleyards.

The Saleyards operated in various forms on the site since 1883 and were finally moved to their present site in Caramut Road in 1970 when the duel lane highway was constructed through Warrnambool.

The Swan Reserve was named after a former mayor of Warrnambool.

Originally the James Swan Reserve occupied the median strip of the present highway between Kepler and Fairy Sts. The James Swan Reserve was transferred to the remainder of the old Saleyards site after construction of the highway. Swan Reserve is named after Cr. James Swan, Mayor 1927-28.

The Society for Growing Australian Plants established a native waterwise garden on the site soon after the Tourist Information Centre building was constructed.

In 1977, the Warrnambool & District Group with the permission and assistance of the council, began the establishment and maintenance of what is now the Swan Reserve Waterwise Garden. The garden was established to beautify the new Tourist Information Centre building and surrounding reserve.

A new architecturally designed Waterwise garden is now planned for the Swan Reserve.

Swan Reserve now has an exciting future. Over the past two years a small band of volunteers have worked with council in protecting and improving the gardens. To compliment the newly renovated, what is now the Children Services Centre building, a masterplan has been completed by TNLA Landscape Architects. This will become the guiding document ensuring any garden works in Swan Reserve stand the test of time. With the help of Warrnambool City Council, Swan Reserve will become a beautiful place enjoyed by families visiting and living in Warrnambool.
