Egret, is any of eight species of birds in the heron family. The name egret comes
from the French word aigrette, which means heron. Like other herons, egrets have
long legs, a long neck, and a long, thin bill. Most egrets have white feathers.
During the mating season, egrets grow long plumes on the back, neck, and head.
These plumes are sometimes called aigrettes. |

Australia's largest Owl, the Powerful Owl is both enigmatic and unpredictable. This does
not, however, take away from this fascinating bird's beauty. Powerful Owls are sometimes
called Eagle Owls. |

The Mistletoe-bird, although not a rarity, is rarely seen because of its elusive nature
and because it stays close to forest areas where mistletoe can be found. Because
sightings are uncommon, Friends of Pallisters committee member Peter Bolte was quite
surprised to spot one of the shy creatures while making a bird count in the Pallister's
forest. As an aid to future management, bird counts are made regularly at the nature
reserve near Orford. |

The main purpose in establishing Pallister's Reserve was to preserve wetlands for brolga
breeding. A swamp near the centre of Pallister's forest has a brolga nesting mound but it
has not been used since the swamp dried up following the abnormally dry winters being
experienced in the south-west
Two eggs can be laid in the period from July to November and hatch after 31 days of
incubation shared by the parents. Brolga flocks in the region during the early days of
European settlement were estimated to be in their thousands. The number of brolgas found
throughout Victoria now is estimated at 400 to 450 stamping it solidly as an endangered
species in this state. |
