The first pistol club in Victoria was formed in Melbourne in 1955 by a group of people who wanted pistol shooting to become a recognised sport.
The Victorian law was changed in 1956 to allow ownership of target pistols just prior to the Olympic games held in Melbourne. Free pistol and Rapid fire were the two events shot at these games.
In the late fifty's the Melbourne pistol club split into three, which later regrouped as affiliated clubs to form the Victorian Amateur Pistol Association.
VAPA became the controlling body for amateur pistol shooting throughout the state and at present has 67 member clubs. Pistol shooting as a sport offers a personal challenge to each shooter and can be enjoyed by all family members, juniors under eighteen years being able to shoot under supervision.
The skills necessary to succeed in pistol shooting are learnt, through coaching, constant practice and competition experience.
There are seventeen pistol matches contested in Australia and our club members compete in nine of these.
Events being based on precision and or timed sequences and are shot over ten, twenty five and fifty metres. Matches are comprised of forty or sixty shots with the highest possible score for each shot being ten.
Specific types of pistols are required for the different events. Pistol licences are only granted for target shooting on approved ranges and when not in use the pistols must be stored in a locked safe.
